Alexey Gorbunov
Senior Backend Engineer / Tech Lead | Go, Python
🎯 About me
Backend engineer with 13+ years of experience. Currently leading backend development on Timeweb Cloud’s corporate mail platform — Go services distributed across 30+ mail spoolers, with AI features built on OpenAI and YandexGPT. Previously tech lead of a 10-engineer team on a multi-tenant website builder serving 281,000 sites, where I rebuilt the publishing pipeline in Go around incremental rebuilds and cut the fleet from 6 instances to 2. Earlier: payment processing, order handling and market-data ingestion for a trading platform. 10+ years on products for international markets (Finland, Canada); working language English.
💼 Experience
Timeweb Cloud — Senior Backend Engineer / Tech Lead
August 2025 — present
Leading backend development (5 engineers, 2 QA engineers) on corporate mail for Timeweb Cloud and Timeweb Hosting — mail hosting on customer domains for B2B and B2C, plus a whitelabel tier where the customer runs the product fully under their own domain, logo and naming.
- Took ownership of a three-year-old codebase; stabilized it and resumed feature delivery
- Moved cross-service communication from REST to gRPC; built out the services needed to reach feature parity with market alternatives — whitelabel proxy agent, mail collector, a new spam-filter service, LDAP and app-password services
- Refactored the distributed mail pipeline across 30+ spoolers: Dovecot → inotify watcher → RabbitMQ → agent → storage, with the API reading over gRPC
- Refactored the event-driven core onto a 3-node RabbitMQ cluster with quorum queues: ~1,500 queues, ~1,500 consumers and ~150 messages/s sustained (10M+ per day)
- Developed AI features: RAG assistant for customer support, email processing, subject-line generation, translation and rephrasing, LLM-assisted antispam layered on rspamd, and MCP integration
- Built the LLM layer: OpenAI + YandexGPT with automatic failover, per-user model routing, rate limiting, retries and cost alerting
- Security: authentication, CORS/CSP/XSS hardening, remediation of bug-bounty findings
Stack: Go · gRPC · RabbitMQ · LLM · RAG · MCP · Observability
Craftum (Timeweb Cloud) — Team Lead / Tech Lead
May 2021 — August 2025
Tech lead of a team of 10 on a multi-tenant website builder: 281,000 sites on the platform, 140,000 paid and live.
- Rebuilt the site publishing pipeline in Go as a RabbitMQ consumer with incremental rebuilds — only pages modified since the previous publish are regenerated. Cut the fleet from 6 instances/24 workers to 2/10
- Expanded the publishing feature from a simple “Publish one page” into “Publish whole site”, “Publish diffs”, “Publish collection” and “Publish collection items”; one collection change can cascade into a rebuild of 10,000+ pages
- Shipped AI features: text generation, image search and generation, translation, and an AI page builder that generated native Craftum blocks from a prompt — constrained generation into the product’s own block schema
- Initiated and led the split of a Flask monolith into 15 FastAPI microservices — core migration in ~3 months by 2 engineers, then extended by the growing team through new services rather than rewrites
- Introduced CI/CD from scratch.
- Owned the e-commerce module, the collections system and international expansion
Stack: FastAPI · Go · Python · PostgreSQL · Microservices · RabbitMQ · CI/CD · Team management
